Platform

Reusable infrastructure for respondent-level data products.

POPULAB provides reusable backend services to ingest, analyze, govern, and productize licensed or otherwise authorized respondent-level research data. Strategic partners apply the platform to differentiated user-facing products.

POPULAB is not another predefined research interface. It is the infrastructure for creating your own.

One common foundation

Every new insights application requires the same underlying capabilities.

POPULAB turns those requirements into reusable platform services.

Data must be loaded.
Metadata must be interpreted.
Weights must be handled correctly.
Analytics must support responsive product experiences.
Users must be authenticated.
Organizations need different access rights.
Dataset licenses have to be respected.
Usage needs to be tracked.
Applications need dependable APIs.

Data ingestion and normalization

Integrate a dataset once so it can support many downstream applications.

Respondent-level research data arrives in many formats and structures. POPULAB converts heterogeneous source datasets into a consistent analytical environment.

Governed respondent analytics

Flexible calculations from respondent-level records—not only fixed reports.

POPULAB performs governed calculations against respondent-level records while controlling what each application and organization may access. Applications request calculations through common analytical services rather than implementing them independently.

This analytical layer supports both interactive applications and automated systems.

Global dataset catalog

A common catalog for respondent-level research.

POPULAB is designed to maintain a catalog of datasets made available through the platform. Each dataset will be represented through a common platform model, including its metadata, available waves, provider, market and access requirements.

Applications can discover what research is available without needing to understand how every provider independently stores or distributes its data.

The catalog can include

Dataset services

Applications need more than calculations. They need to understand the data. POPULAB exposes a consistent programming model even when underlying source datasets differ.

Enterprise governance

Respondent-level data frequently comes with complex licensing and usage restrictions. POPULAB treats governance as core infrastructure — determining not just who a user is, but what data and services they are entitled to consume.

Usage metering

Usage can be captured at multiple levels, providing the foundation for internal allocation, partner reporting and future commercial models.

Developer platform

POPULAB is designed to be built on. The platform is intentionally decoupled from any single front end.

Discover once. Integrate once.

A global organization should not rebuild its application for every provider or market.

A global organization may license research from different providers in different markets.

Once a dataset is available through POPULAB, authorized applications can work with it through the same platform services used for other datasets.

The application does not need to be rebuilt simply because the underlying research provider or geography changes.

Catalog does not mean unrestricted access

Built for licensed research.

POPULAB does not replace the commercial relationship between a research owner and its customer.

01

Technical availability

Datasets can be cataloged and technically available within POPULAB while access remains controlled through organization-level entitlements and permissions. An organization can see the research available through the ecosystem and obtain access when the appropriate license is in place.

Organization entitlementsDataset permissionsLicense enforcement
02

Commercial control

Research owners remain in control of their data rights. Customers gain a much simpler technical environment in which to consume licensed research.

POPULAB manages technical access. The research owner controls commercial access.

Why now?

GenAI changed the economics of application development.

Until recently, building many specialized applications was prohibitively expensive. Organizations therefore centralized research functionality into a relatively small number of generalized tools.

That constraint is disappearing. It is increasingly economical to build interfaces around very specific users and workflows.

The interface is no longer the hard part.

The bottleneck has shifted. The challenge is providing each new application with controlled, governed, and responsive access to data and analytical services.

That is the layer POPULAB provides.

The front end is becoming cheap. Enterprise data infrastructure is not.

Architecture principle

Separate the platform from the product.

POPULAB believes the long-term architecture of the industry will have two distinct layers.
